Suggestions for Malware:

R

Robert

Since I cannot get my sister's A-Squared to download, I was wondering
if any had any suggestions for freee malware removers?

Also, since I cannot get it to download Microsoft Updates, is there
another way of doing it without going to the Microsoft/Windows Update
sites?

Thanks

Getting the machine cleaned up will probably fix the Windows Update
issue so do the malware removal first.

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to
do all scans in Safe Mode. Please see the special Notes regarding using
Multi_AV in Vista.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV - instructions
http://pcdid.com/Multi_AV.htm - download

You can also check to see if there are targeted removal steps for your
malware here:
Bleeping Computer removal how-to's -
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the first link above (not here, please).

Not all tools used will work in Vista and you will need to run them
elevated. Since Vista is so new, it will be a while before removal
techniques and tools are developed. If you are unable to remove the
infection by following the general steps, register at one of the
HijackThis forums as suggested.

Standard caveat: If the procedures look too complex - and there is no
shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that not all local shops
are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may
be so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. Have all
your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

I guess I wasn't clear enough and that you missed my earleir posts
regarding my sister's computer. Not your fault actually, but
everything runs fine including Spybot, AVG, Comodo, and IE7 etc.with
the exception of not being able to download A-squared updates or to
recieve Microsoft downloads yet she's able to download updates from
Spybot for example and she has Active-X installed.

She has a Dell B110 and is running XP home version with DSL
connection. I have checked her connections using XP connection
verification program and all is fine with the exception that when I
click on Tools>Internet Options>Connections, the fields are all blank
whereas mine show the ISP and the 'never dial a connection' is choosen
etc. I tried entering this information manually but it did nothing in
regards to the updates.
I have the same ISP, and same programs e.g. Comodo, A-squared, AVG,
Spybot
and am also running XP home version, the only difference is that I
have a Dell Dimension 8200 so I don't understand why my computer is
able to download the updates and she isn't?
I would have thought that when installing DSL with the ISP CD these
field would be automatically filled as I don't remember manually doing
so with mine.

I use Spybot and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. There are alternative sites to
get MS updates, although this is not recommended. Are you using IE to
get MS updates? What error(s) are you getting?

Here's your first post in this thread:

"Since I cannot get my sister's A-Squared to download, I was wondering
if any had any suggestions for freee malware removers?

"Also, since I cannot get it to download Microsoft Updates, is there

This is a newsgroup, not a forum, so if you posted the above information
in a different thread of course I didn't monitor it. Posting through
Google Groups as you are doing is always awkward.

So you weren't asking for alternate free malware removers because your
sister's machine was infested; you wanted them because A-Squared and
Windows Update weren't working? It would seem that her machine has a
problem with IE7. Suggestions:

1. You can try re-registering .dll's. To re-register .dll's:

Start>Run cmd [enter]
iexplore.exe /rereg [enter]

2. Run her IE7 without any add-ons.

3. Post in the IE7 newsgroup: microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

4. For Windows Update questions, post in the Windows Update newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windowsupdate

Does your sister run any of the Protection software in Real Time mode
protection (i.e the software configured to protect/disallow any changes be
made to the Operating system, like spybot in Tea Timer Mode, Ad-Aware in
Ad-watch Mode can prevent/block user(s) from doing any changes, try this in
Safe Mode and see if you can change any thing (either in safe mode not
guarantee it will not interfere).
Again it does not mean having all of that, that the computer will not be
compromised or it could be a User profile damaged or corrupt, try to create
another profile and copy the data to it after being sure the profile is
culprit in this scenario.

Get the macine cleaned-up and Windows/Microsoft Update will most likely work
again.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
