Suddenly, "Unspecified error"

J

Hi, working with MM, everything fine. Then, one fine fall day, I open a
project file that worked fine, and I get "Unspecified Error". I tried all the
fixes in these forums with resetting the directory permissions for the Temp
file, etc. Nothing has fixed it.

One thing I guessed might have an effect, but don't know how to fix it, is I
have a Registry file cleaner (Registry Booster). I might have run a registry
clean between when the project files worked, and when they were broken.

I know this is very strange, but any thoughts?

I got the same err msg yesteday on dual boot Dell w/ Intel chipset + Nvidia
card but no sound card -- integrated sound. mm has worked fine, right thru
XPSP2 and mm2 w/o sound card (recommended by ms).. I had been trying to burn
a DVD w/o menus using Ulead then roxio then 'zap' no mm2 .. "unspecified
error"
movie maker "unspecified error" gets 1 hit on mskb - trying to burn a DVD in
Vista w/ a mm2 video on a machine w/ Intel 945 integ chipset
2 more curious items... xp on this dual boot has all netwrk disabled ..
booted into Safe Mode and signed in as admin and I could start mm2 w/o prob
(except msg regards 640x480 res) .. the other thing I did was u/i SP2 and SP1
w/ mm1 was ok
I'm gonna swap out drives w/ mirror and see if I can get mm2 to go ..
otherwise I think it's a hw issue, maybe nvidia, maybe no sound card.. good
luck

I've found only 1 way to 'solve' prob --reinstall! --and I mean WINDOWS and
I don't mean hitting R for repair (boot from CD) --I mean complete reinstall
and all the bother that entails (chipset video progs) WINXPSP1~2 msi v2 wmp9
directx 9.0c mm2. I have since split dual boot into 2 machines .. dropped
XPSP1 hdd into new barebones w/ core duo and larger power supply + 2GB RAM..
getting new video card today and that should solve prob for good. I hope.
This machine will nevertouch the Internet (except through shared removable
media).. had to re-register way old DELL OEM XP o/s over the telephone to
Microsoft yesterday.

There appear to be a lot of Microsoft users who are experiencing problems
with Movie Maker. This would be VERY easy to remedy if Microsoft had enough
common sense to provide a download to re-install Movie Maker, but I guess
that expecting them to have ANY common sense is unrealistic.

20081229 - There is or was a dwnld avail to intall mm2 for XP. Along w/ msi 3
or whatever I installed mm2 on XPSP1 (no connex machine) after install nvidia
card + sound blaster. Still works. Movie Maker must be something ms picked up
from somebody else and as good as it is I really don't expect much support. I
think all video edit sw is buggy.

There is one solution that worked exquisitely well for me when WMM
started refusing to launch ("Unspecified error") on my Vista Home
Premium laptop. It may or may not help you folks in this thread. It
involves eliminating the read-only attribute of the user temp folder
(the folder file itself, not the files under it). In Vista it can only
be done using the command prompt window. There is a full set of
observations and a novice-level procedure I posted in a forum
elsewhere - see the relevant thread and its January 2009 entries at
http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=ideaPad&thread.id=2570.

I had this happen also, it has been several months now and I just had to
completely reinstall windows because of some other issues and when finished I
went to use moviue maker and it STILL gave the unspecified error message when
I tryed to import an avi. Guess we have to live without movie maker till
microsoft decides to fix this problem.
