Suddenly Having Problems!

Hi,

I recently installed TM Internet Security 2008 and some time during that
process shutdown improperly. When I restarted some type of diagnostic screen
came up and seemed to be checking the hard drive for failure.

Anyway here's what I've been getting now: on startup the Win XP progress
bar/screen is on as it always has. Now before it gets to the user logins,
the screen goes black momentarily and flashes the "energy blue" background,
which none of the users are utilizing, before settling on the login screen.
Also the same happens when switching between users: black screen, "energy
blue", then user login. Occasionally I get the "windows cannot load the
users profile but has logged you on with the default profile". At this point
I usually just restart.
I tried system restore which restore points but it wouldn't restore so I
went to run it in the safe mode but the restore points were gone. I'm lost
and thinking that my only option is the "pc restore" which I'm trying to
avoid.

Thanks,

jd
