sudden shutdown

My computer would suddenly shut down as if the power was switched off. It would then turn on and start from scanning disk. Someone suggested that i had virus on my machine and i just bought Nortan Antivirus to clean them out. But it still happens from time to time. Any one has any clues?

Doesn't sound like any virus I've ever seen.
Sounds more like a really simple solution:
Make sure your power plug is firmly in the back of the machine and surge
protector.
If it isn't that it is likely the surge protector itself. I assume you ARE
using a surge protector.

If you're sure you don't have a virus, then you might have heat problem
or a power supply problem, some other hardware problem, or a driver
problem. My computer did the same thing and it was the fan (heat) and
power supply. Diagnosis can be complicated. Unless you're sure of what
you're doing, you might consider having a pro take a look and diagnose
and possibly repair. If you want, you could start at the link below to
see if there's anything you can figure out yourself. Good luck.

thanks for your suggestions. BTW, did yours started back up right away after shutting down? Mine does. So it does not seem to be the, it could be malfunctioning power supply. It that is the case I could have my computer replaced since i still have the service contract.

Well then definitely have it repaired/replaced if it's still warrantied.
Not likely to be hear or it wouldn't start back up right away but very
likely, as Melissa said, to be a faulty power supply.
