Sudden Shutdown and problems with startup

Hi, I have been having problems with the system suddenly shutting down. I can't what's wrong with it. I've downloaded the sasser worm fix and it has found nothing. The problem is so bad I can't even reformat the system by rebooting from the CD-rom. The system will just shut down with no error msg.
Also, sometimes I can get to windows like now, while other times I can't start up properly. So far the only startup error msg I manage to catch before it shuts down is "A write operation was attempted on a volume after it was dismounted". How can check if it really is a hardware problem?

Examine your System and Application event logs.

Right Click My Computer, Left Click Manage. This
will open the Microsoft Management Console.
In the Left hand pane click (Expand) the + beside the
Event viewer. Then check both the Application and the
System logs for Red icons. These indicate Errors that
you can click to get a more detailed description.

It sounds like you have a problem with write-behind
caching. Drives can be configured, so that data is not
immediately written to the disk. Some external drives
should not have this option enabled, specifically it can
result in lost of data.
