Sudden failure of installion programs

Suddenly, without warning or explanation, my Win2000 (Ver 5, Build 2195, SP4)
on my Pent-4 computer refuses to install programs for earlier versions of
windows, such as 95, that it did before. Neither the Add/Remove Program, nor
Command Line, nor clicking on Install.exe or Setup.exe on the CD in Explorer
will work. Nothing happens. As I recall, I had to reinstall everything when
I upgraded to 2000 from 98, because I wanted 2000 in a different partition.
So also installed Acrobat previously under Win2000.

I was having trouble with Acrobat PDFWriter hanging up and tried to
uninstall and reinstall Acrobat 3.01 for Win 3.1, 95 or NT 3.51+. After the
uninstall, nothing - no ability whatsoever to install it again. Then I tried
to install QuickBooks 5.0 (3.1 and 95) which I had recently installed on this
computer under Win2000. Nothing. I then tried TurboCAD Designer v7 (Win
95/98/ME/2000/NT) and the autorun window came up. Wonderful.

I want my ability to install programs for previous versions of Windows back.
If this is some attempt by MS to make us buy new versions, if reeks of
restraint and manipulation of trade. I live on Social Security Disability
and can't afford that kind of nonsense. It's about a much fun as yesterday,
when Word 97 hiccupped and lost a whole morning's work on my Ticket to Work
Program business plan.

These things just tie my stomach up in knots and make me sorry I didn't
start out with a Mac back when. Why can't Microsoft write software that just
works? To me, the programmer's macho bluster, that mastering overly
complicated footwork demonstrates superiority, is a refuge for the kind of
incompetence that couldn't walk in a staight or graceful line:
"Well, maybe you just don't know how to use computers!" <:{)
I've been trying to set up WinNT on an older, slower computer to use for
non-business things, and I'm back again to the pain of infinintely repeated
attempts to install hardware drivers and software until I learn how to hold
my nose right. I have to wonder if Mr. Gates' efforts in Africa can truly
balance the scales for all the pain he has caused here.

Jeez. just when I thought I understood it all. I guess I'll have to leap
off a bridge now. Or a footstool.

I'm baffled as to why you installed Windows 2000 in the fist place if
all your programs are for Windows98?!?!?!?!!?
