Subweb problems

I would be really grateful for any help or advice as I have been unable to
access any of my sites for about the last five days.

I am hosting multiple FP sites on the 1&1 server. The problem seems to be
with me and not them. If I try to log directly into a subdomain - I am taken
to the root directory instead. Then if I try to upload changed pages
manually, I am unable to open any of my subwebs. (I can open normal folders -
just not webs)

I am completely at a loss as to what to try next - I have been through
disabling firewalls etc etc with 1&1 support but none of these things have
worked and they have run out of suggestions! (although they were most
helpful)

They are able to log into/open my subwebs, so the problem is on my local
computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled FP - infact I was so desparate
to fix it that I reformatted my HD ... I still have the same problem and I
dont remember any change I made that may have caused this. It seemed that one
day it was working and the next it wasn't.

Other suggestions I have tried are as follows:

* I created a Tripod account and uploaded a small site with a subsite. It
uploaded all but the subsite. When I tried to select just the subsite to
upload manually it could not be selected. Another interesting thing was after
uploading the main site all pages were still marked for upload! So I
synchronized too - it did the same thing ...

* I converted one of the subwebs back to a folder and then back to a subweb
again - still no difference

* When I open the site live and go to the tools menu - the 'server' option
is there, but is not available to be selected.

*I also uninstalled and reinstalled the extensions but its just the same too
....

If anyone has any other suggestions I would be most grateful. Thanks.

(I am using FP 2003)

What happen when you open the root web in FP and then double click a subweb to open?

If the subwebs do not have a global on them, then they are no longer FP subwebs. This would happen
any time the extensions are removed from the account.

Hi Thomas - yes they are still marked with a globe in the root web. When I
double click to open a subweb nothing happens at all - no error message -
they just won't open.

I disabled and reenabled the extensions - they are still the same.

Have you contacted your web host?

Yes, I did. They were helpful and went through a number of options with me
but none worked (such as firewalls etc) They are able to open my subwebs so I
presume the problem is with my local computer.

Can you provide the steps you are using to open the subweb(s)?

Thank you for all your help Thomas. I think the problem could be my HD, as it
originated before I installed any updates. I think I going to have to get an
engineer.

Regards,

Dawn.

Sorry for a late response here, Dawn -- just saw your message. The following
is the procedure I'm using for setting up subwebs (in my case, I need subwebs
that are accessible by other people, who in turn do *not* have admin access
to the main site, so some of these steps may be irrelevant for you).

Also, this procedure requires access to your site's Control Panel (my host
uses CPanel).

1. CPanel: create subdomain.

2. CPanel: create FTP user (though I don't think you really need this,
unless the person needs direct FTP access for some reason). The subdirectory
name will be automatically set to match the username, unless you change this
(as you should).

3. CPanel: install FrontPage extensions on subdomain.

4. Open http://www.yoursite.com (your main site) live within Frontpage.
Use root username/pwd.

5. Go to Tools, Server, Administration Home.

6. Under Subwebs, click the name of the subweb you want to manage.

7. Select Manage Users, then Add User. Make the user an "Advanced Author",
which should be sufficient.

8. User name will be "username", without any trailing "@yoursite.com".
User should navigate to http://www.yoursite.com/subweb from within Publish
screen.

Again, not sure if this will help you out -- or if you've already resolved
your problem. Hope it's of some use to someone, though.
