Subtotals error '1004'

I receive an error that does not allow me to subtotal data as indicated
below. However this problem appears to occur arbitrarily since on certain
workbooks I am allowed to subtotal the same data whereas in others I am not
allowed.

Is there a way I can prevent this error since it appears to occur
arbitrarily with the same data?

"Run-time error '1004':
To prevent possible loss of data,
Microsoft Excel cannot shift nonblank
cells off the worksheet.
Try to delete or clear the cells to
the right and below your data. Then
select cell A1, and save your workbook
to reset the last cell used.
Or, you can move the data to a new
location and try again."

Hi
error 1004 somtimes occurs because protection has been turned on and you
are trying to alter a protected cell.
Check for protected cells and see if that fixes the problem.
