substantial delay in MSIE6 opening

For no known reason (no hardware or software installation for several
weeks), IE6 no longer opens instantaneously but takes anywhere from 35-40
seconds from the doubleclick of the IE icon. The cursor turns to an hour
glass but only for a few seconds before revverting back to normal. There
are no other indications that anything is happening until the browser
finally opens. This does not happen with Netscape or FireFox but I prefer
to use IE so I'd like to "fix" it if that is possible. I realize this is
probalby and overly broad issue so I'd appeciate any help in narrowing it
down to trace the problem. I am running XP MCE 2004 on a Dell 4600C with
260Gb hard drive (70% free) and 2Gb RAM. MSIE
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158

The answer is quite simple: You haven't got enough space on your harddrive to
run IE. You need at least 500 GB free...that was a joke.

Seriously: Try looking through your cookies folder, and delete a few (ok, a
lot) that you don't need. I wipe out my cookies folder on a routine basis.
Warning: this will remove all of your "automatic login" settings, so write
down any passwrods you will forget between deleting the cookies and returning
to those sites. Look in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Cookies (note: I
run XP, you may have to look for it).

Another option is to clear out your cache (which can get absolutely huge).

Hope this narrows things a bit :)

First eliminate any spyware.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
