Subst does not work in windows explorer

I have used subst to define E:\work\work as L:\.

L: is available at the dos prompt, and when I open files from microsoft
word, but when I open windows explorer the drive is not listed under my
computer. It used to work!

Can you tell me what to look for that could be causing this problem?

OS Win XP if that makes any difference.

as far as I know, XP Pro does allow msdos prompt subst work in ie

if it does not, you could try use the net use command with shares made
either in explorer or command prompt/ Shares must be made by administrator,
I believe not by regular user though.
