subsite

I am trying to exclude a statistic folder from a search engine on my site. I
was told to create a subweb. I have tried to do this by right clicking on
the folder and selecting subsite. I check the box add to current website,
but I keep getting a server error message that states, "cannot change
permissions of file "home/sites/site38/web/tools/index.html" Please help. My
search results continue to include statist pages from my site. Website is
www.thelimogeslady.com.
Thanks,

That means your host is controlling the stats folder page permissions and they will have to do it for you

The problem is that the host is not familar with FrontPage. What should I
tell him that I need for him to do so that the search will not include this
statistic folder.

The host needs to either convert the folder to be a FP subweb/site or move the folder outside of the
web root and then give you FTP access to it.

Is there another way around this. The webdesigner indicates that he can't
move it outside the web folder and I does not know what it means to
make it a FP subweb/site, he is not sure that is something he has the
capability to do either the way the server is set up.

He says he has never seen a search script that wouldn't allow you to exclude
certain
folders, but then again he has never used a FP search script. Is there a
page that lets you pick the file types that it searches? If so I would think
there would be some sort of exclusion in there.

The only options you have available are those in the dialog box when using the FP search component,
there is one other option that might work, that is for your web host to rename the stat folder to
start with the underscore character.

Web host really should never store the stat folder within the web root.

Sounds like it's time for a new host (-;
- IMHO hosts that install the FP SE and don't know how to configure / manage them aren't worth much and are the largest cause for
all the user complaints about them

FP search depends on the server OS
The standard search is WAIS and will only exclude folders in a web that are _hidden (starting w/ an underscore) - normally WAIS is
used on non-Windows servers
- so he may be able to rename that folder to a _stats folder instead of stats
(but I doubt his stats script will work w/ different folder names)
- so he needs to remove the unique permissions of the stats folder so you can convert it to a FP subweb, then he can reapply them
- a Good FP SE host would have set up your site w/ the Stats (and any other admin folders) as FP Subwebs

On Windows Server you can use Index Server / Index Catalog where specific folders can be added and searches can include or exclude
subwebs
- sometimes host offer access to a control panel to allow you to create an Index catalog,
- sometimes you have to ask them to do it for you
- and sometime they just don't allow use of Index Server

It has nothing to do w/ search "scripts" but how the FP SE are configured on the server and how permissions are managed on the
server

Unfortunately they often do because that's part of your total space allocation
(and they don't know any better)

Thanks to both of you. It looks like by renaming the stats folder to _stats
it has resolved the issue. I appreciate your assistane.
