Subreport error 'can't use crosstab qry'

My subreport works fine when run outside of the main report and the main
report is correct once I 'OK' past the initial subreport error only the
subreport does not show.

The error states essentially 'you can't use a pass-through or
non-fixed-column crosstab query in subreport. Set query's ColumnHeadings
property'.

The fields in the subreport are based on the same SELECT query as the main
report except for one field which is a calculation of the other fields in the
same subreport.

I can't figure out the problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Enter all possible column headings into the Column Headings property of the
Crosstab query.

But both the main report and the subreport have one and the same SELECT query
as their source.

There is a crosstab query further back in the process, but I needed the
crosstab query specifically to pull only 2 specific records from the original
table and to use those 2 records as columns.

I start with a main table. I created the crosstab query to pull those to
records I need. Then I created a select query which uses both the main table
and the crosstab query but the column headins in this I believe are set,
static and without questions. I then pull data from that select query to use
in both the main report and the subreport. I even tried creating essentially
a duplicate select query of the first to see if using a select query based
entirely on one source would help but it didn't. Does this make any sense?
It's hard to explain.

I made one suggestion regarding entering all possible column headings in the
Column Headings property. Did you try this?

Sorry. I did see that but thought it may not apply since it is not a crosstab
query. I guess I don't understand how a query column could not have a heading
so that I need to add one. Also, I don't see a property setting on the query
for column headings. I'm a numbskull. What am I miss understanding?

"since it is not a crosstab" and "There is a crosstab query further back in
the process"... Find the crosstab and set the column headings property.
