i am trying to write a bulleted list with bulleted points after the last
item, eg:

-item 1
-item 2
-item 3 - item a
- item b

etc. how do i do this to correctly align the second set of bullets with each
other? particularly the point which would be item a on the example above as
it is on the same line as item 3, so tab doesn't work?

Please help!!!

To use the Tab and Shift+Tab key combinations with numbered or
bulleted lists, do the following:

For Word 2000 and earlier: Tools | Options, Edit tab: "Tabs and
backspace set left indent."

For Word 2002 and later: Tools | AutoCorrect, AutoFormat As You Type
tab: "Set first and left indent with tabs and backspaces."

Also note that, for complete control, you may want to set up your
bullets as an outline list. See

set first and left indent was already selected. it doesn't work for the first
sub bullet, which is on the same line as the last item on the bulleted list

It seems as if you have to adjust the indents specifically for this
level. If you are not using styles, do this directly via Format |
Bullets and Numbering.

However, in the long run it would be easier to link the numbering
levels to styles (and set the desired options for each level). See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

By the way, how are you creating two numbered items on the same line
of text?

a different way!

As to how i got the bullets there in the first place, i tried everything i
could think of, i'm not sure which of them actually got them there!!!

You are not very specific... What were the exact steps that you tried?
What is your workaround?

Sometimes, trial and error can be very useful. You learn a lot from
it. The downside, of course, is that it is time-consuming.

In case you ever need to use numbering again, you may want to take a
closer look at the following articles:
