styles in master and subdocuments

I have created a number of documents using the same template and same styles.
When I insert these into a master document (with what I thought was the same
template) the styles change. I have tried fixing the document styles in both
the master document and the subdocument but each time I close the file then
reopen they styles change again. Specific problem is with numbered lists
which need to restart from 1 in each new subdocument - everytime the file is
closed then reopened the paragraph indent, font and numbering style is
changed. Very confused ...

Sorry, I don't have an answer to your question because I almost never use
Master Documents. "Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a
"feature" that not only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The
consensus (with the limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering
advice on these newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a
sure way to destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document
that you are not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly
when he said that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are
corrupt and those that will be corrupt soon. See <URL:
http://www.addbalance.com/word/masterdocuments.htm> for information on the
Master Document feature and workarounds. (This page also has a link to Steve
Hudson's chapter on how he gets Master Documents to work.) See <URL:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm> for more
information on what goes wrong, and <URL:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/RecoverMasterDocs.htm> for ideas on
how to salvage what you can.

That said, numbering styles are different from styles in general.

See: How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word
document

Hi =?Utf-8?B?bWl4ZWRwZXBwZXJz?=,

It always helps to mention the version of Word involved in a question.

Based on what I understand, your only solution would be to create a separate
style for each list that should start renumbering at 1

OR

to use Margaret Aldis's approach, where the numbering that you see is actually
level 2 of an outline numbering style. Level 1 has no number, and would be
associated with a style that will always be used between lists, and will cause
the numbering to restart at 1.

The problem is that there's no way to tell Word to reliably to restart numbering
for any particular list when you pull separate documents together.
