Styles and Formatting /TOC making changes

I am using TOC 8 and 9 for Appendix listing. I want to modify TOC 8 and 9
to look like TOC 1 and 2. I now have TOC appearing on my Styles and
Formatting window.The way I got the TOC styles to appear on S&F was to
select Custom on S&F and check them off. When I click on the dropdown on
TOC 8 or 9 and then modify/format/tabs, they show no tabs, and this is for
all TOCs! Yet if I go to a TOC paragraph in my document ,rt
click/pargraph/tabs that screen shows the tabs. Why wouldn't the S&F TOC
entries not be showing tabs?

The default tabs in TOC styles (right tab at the margin, left tab at the
hanging indent) are set automatically on the fly. See “TOC Styles Don’t Have
