Style locking

We use Word 2003. We would like to lock styles so that they cannot be updated
by the users as they write, but we would still like to allow users to apply
character formatting on top of a paragraph style (namely bold, italics, and
underlining). Is this possible?

Hi Steve-

You should find what you need in Tools>Protect Document (Protect Document
Task Pane), but you will have to create Character Styles for each
attribute/combination that you want to allow the users. Enable the Styles
through the Protect Document Task Pane. The users will not be able to modify
the Styles allowed or create new Styles.
