Stuck with a blank safemode screen...

Here's my latest tale of woe:

I tried to F8 to safemode to run a virus scan, and all that came up was a
black screen with the four corners labeled as safemode.

Rebooting brings up an entirely black screen with a flashing cursor that
won't do anything.

Doing an XP repair installation takes me right back to the blank safemode
screen.

Any ideas out there?

And no, I can't seem to access anything; I am using a friends computer.

Please help, there are some photos in there that I really want to save.
