Stuck WAV definition

Double-clicking a WAV file always opens a horribly old looking media player (looks like win3.1), there is no entry in file types, and nothing for wav in the registry - I deleted it in anger. If I right click, open with, select an app, and tick always, it doesn't remember it.

That sounds like Windows Media Player 6x.

Enter mplayer2 in the Start => Run box.

If the Media Player that comes up is it, you can remove it
by deleting the mplayer2.exe file in the Windows Media
Player folder.

Presuming you want to use the present Windows Media Player, load that
from Start - All Programs and take its Tools - Options - File Types.
Check Windows audio (wav) and OK, and it will set up its association.
Similarly other player programs you might want to use, eg Winamp - just
have it checked in one only

Thanks! Doing that in media player seemed to fix whatever weird stuff had happened in the registry, allowing me to then adjust it to use what I wanted.

When your pet bird sees you reading the newspaper, does it wonder why you're sitting there staring at carpeting?
