Stuck NumLock key after XP installation?

Harold Gunn

I've reformatted and done a clean installation of XP Pro in a Dell 700
mhz PIII desktop. The installation was completely uneventful.

My problem is that, when I tried to install the first program, the
numlock key was frozen, making the keyboard unusuable. The keyboard
worked during the XP installation, but I can't get it to work now. I
have a blinking cursor, but I can't type anything anywhere.

Two other keyboards that work with other computers behave exactly the
same when I connect them to this computer. XP says they're working
properly, but there is a warning line during bootup about a stuck key.
Is the keyboard controlled by the bios, and does this mean that I need
to update the bios? Are there other likely causes of this problem?

I'll appreciate all advice. Thanks..

You computer may be different than mine, but I do have a BIOS setting to
turn on the numlock key. Go into your BIOS setup and see whether you you
have such an option, and if on, turn it off. A new BIOS should not be
necessary.

Exactly how to acces the BIOS depend on the motherboard. But, in general,
somewhere within the first 30 seconds after a PC is turned on you will a
black screen with white characters flashing by. If you look closely it
should tell you how to get into the BIOS setup. if not, see the
moltherboard manual, or contact the PC maker. DEL and ESC and F1, F2, F3,
F10 are popular, but there are others.

I'll bet you're right, Bob. I don't wander around in there very often,
but I remember that setting.

I'd guess there's a problem with the keyboard connector on the motherboard,
if it says "key stuck" when booting, regardless of which keyboard is
connected....
