streaming wma only

I have a wma file (I wrote and sung the song so there is no copyrights to
deal with) that I'm wanting to post on my website so that it will stream only
and no one will able to "Save As" or copy the song. Does anyone know how to
do this? Just like music.msn.com and launch.yahoo.com allow users to listen
to wma files only and not "Save As" the wma. Thanks for any help!

Eventually the audible (or visible) data can be copied. Face that.

So you are saying that I can really copy songs without paying for them for
services such as launch.yahoo.com and music.msn.com? Whenever I listen to
songs from those sites the "Save As" is disabled, do you know how to disable
the "Save As"?

Have a look at Total Recorder, http://www.highcriteria.com/.
Also at the products at http://www.applian.com/, both audio-only and video.
There may be more software with similar functionality, maybe even freeware.

And finally, if a protection scheme should be based on the inner workings of
Windows, then it is useless under MacOS or Linux.

So, Todd, you may change your mind. I have no experience in this field at
all, but I think that I would do something like this:
Keep the original file away from any file server or shared directory. E-mail
it to those that qualify in a password-protected archive (like possible in
the RAR-format of WinRAR) - and provide them with the password. Some scheme
like that.
You may consider making an inferior version of the file available through
some web site. Inferior in a way like: low fidelity, fade-out after a short
time, intermittent noice or silence.

To everybody:
I hope that this article makes you see this matter from two sides. Imagine
how you would feel if you were on the other side of the line. Don't block,
don't rip.

Chris,
Thanks for your response, those are things to think about. I was planning
on setting up a page that has no links to it, so only people that know about
the page will go to it. And I was wanting to turn the "Save As" feature off
in wmplayer, but I can't figure out how to do that. I guess I would be ok
with it, if I could make it as difficult as possible to save the wma file
which I think if I could figure out how to turn the "Save As" off would
accomplish that.

Don't underestimate the search engines!

I think that it was a news item here (in the Netherlands) the other month
that search engines had revealed very confidential data (across the globe),
thought safe.

I am not a hacker. But when I found part of the home page of a close friend
password-protected, I tried and succeeded easily in downloading the entire
contents (and subsequently told her).

You said so, yes. :)

I am not the ultimate reference at all on this. Who knows what a Google
advanced search on "WMA" AND "protection" teaches you.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure search engines only are able to look at
the home page and any linking pages. So if a page has no link to it then
search engines are not aware it exist. We already do this from our website
so that only users who know the pages exist can access them directly and I"m
unable to find links from any of the major search engines. But, oh well, the
search goes on for wma project. The Windows Media Encoder from microsoft may
have something, I'm going to try that next.

Serve the file from a Windows Media Server. That's what they're doing. =)

Zach,

Thanks so much for your response ! I did some searching and it seems the
only way to keep someone from downloading and saving a wma file is to use
Windows Media Server. However, I don't think our hosting company offers
Windows Media Server. Well at least now I know what can and can't be done.
Again, thanks for your response, I couldn't have found this info out without
it !

For everyone else a great article on streaming wma files is:
