Strangest bug I've heard of

One of my users reported "I just tried to print an Autocad file, and when I
tried to send it to the printer the machine tried to save it as a .mdi music
file and locked up Autocad.". This user is an engineer and not given to
flights of fantasy so I take this report at face value.

Could this be caused by a virus? Any helpful suggestions would be welcome.

Potentially, if an alternative 'printer server' were set up, and the
'default printer' changed.

There may well be a more benign explanation though, such as the wrong button
pressed (even engineers are human), or another application recently
installed that's altered the default printer settings.

Check, to be on the safe side.

Also check RAM. As Bad ram can cause random behavior. Give the machine
an overall hardware check up.

Check Ram with memtest86+

Umm, sounds like the engineer tried to print to Microsoft Office
Document Image Writer compressed format. I would change the default
printer to something that handles paper on the users PC.

Are you sure about that?

Couldn't have been a real engineer. They would know that .MID is a music
file, not mDI!

That was well spotted. Must admit I missed the reference to .mdi rather than
..mid when I read it first time.
