Strange Problem

J

John McCoy

I just upgraded and bought a P4C800-E Deluxe board, a Northwood 3.0 GHz CPU
and 2 512 MB of OCZ PC3200 DDR400 ram and a Seagate 160 GB SATA drive. I had
the worst time ever bringing this machine up. I get a warning that the CPU
failed the check test. I upgraded the bios and it is better but when it is
cold I got this error this morning I rebooted it twice and it was fine. Once
it is up it is solid as a rock.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there a fix?

Thanks

Hi,

Sorry you are having trouble with the system. I have exactly the same
selection of CPU (3.0g Northwood), motherboard, and OCZ 3200 RAM, the
only difference with my setup is that I chose a different SATA drive
(WD Raptor 74g). My first thought would be that the CPU fail report
may be valid. The CPU may have an issue when cold. It could be an
internal fault with any number of its components at startup. You
might contact your vendor and discuss an exchange. (Hopefully they
will send you a nice new Northwood.)

My second thought would be to try a different power supply. Is it
possible that it is marginal on the vcore rail? I have seen posts
regarding various power supplies and the P4C800-E Deluxe where even
though the total power rating of the supply is impressive, there was
an incompatibility. From a post last June in this group:

"There was a specific incompatibility between some ANTEC PSU's and a
P4B800E delux. The issue is supposed to be related to ASUS not
recognizing the voltage +5 pin4, on the ATX connector. This is only
for rev 1.02 boards, and specific to the boards with an ending serial
like "-A02" along the side close to IDE/floppy connectors."

I am not sure if the above scenario pertains to your board, but if you
have another supply sitting around (who doesn't?) it might be worth
trying a swap to see if the issue goes away. I ended up with an
Enermax EG465AX-VE(W) because I liked the current distribution on the
various rails, especially the 35amp rating of the 3.3vdc bus.

I hope the resolution proves to be an easy one.

Ender

Thanks, I have an Enermax 465 that worked fine with my P4TE but I wouldn't
rule that out. I have 2 fans not working which does point to the power
supply, the power supply is about 2 years old.

I need to get one for my wife, any suggestions on a good one? Is Antec any
good, that last post led me to believe that wasn't a good option, where is a
good place to order a PS from?

I would like to try the power supply first before betting on the CPU since
this is a retail chip and the odds of it being bad are slim.

Thanks
John

I just brought to life a P4C800-E Deluxe with a 3.0 Prescott using an Antec

I plan to pick up a new power supply and try it. That is good to know about

I have a very bad experience with Enermax:

Last year my son offered a front panel for my birthday. The power supply was
inverted. Fortunately, only my CD burmer was connected to it. I fried it,
applying 15 V to the 5V input. It's a __ manufacturer error __, not a
failure.

My 465 W PSU failed 9 months after purchase, didn't start. It was under
guatanty and I tried to have another brand because of my lack of confidence
in Enermax and the non-availability.

I got another one loaned by the dealer and mine was finally exchanged 3.5
months later. I had to return at the dealer (20 km) because the new one
wasn't compatible with the MoBo (extended connector). They picked an adapter
from another model and gave it to me.

May be I got two lemons. Dunno ! but I won't buy Enermax again.

Take care, the first day my PSU failed, I put an old 300W in my system.
Close to be overloaded. Ripple was quite high and the +12V was exceeding a
bit the rating (12.68 V inst.of 12.6 max).
Harmful for the electronics.

Rush on the Antec !

selection of CPU (3.0g Northwood), motherboard, and OCZ 3200 RAM,
the
only difference with my setup is that I chose a different SATA drive

This is only
for rev 1.02 boards, and specific to the boards with an ending
serial
like "-A02" along the side close to IDE/floppy connectors."

I am not sure if the above scenario pertains to your board, but if you
have another supply sitting around (who doesn't?) it might be worth
trying a swap to see if the issue goes away. I ended up with an
Enermax EG465AX-VE(W) because I liked the current distribution on
the
various rails, especially the 35amp rating of the 3.3vdc bus.

I hope the resolution proves to be an easy one.

Regards,

Ender

Correct values.

Thanks, I am getting the following readings.

no -12 no -5 and Aux is 3.20V

Thanks

Take care, the first day my PSU failed, I put an old 300W in my system.
Close to be overloaded. Ripple was quite high and the +12V was
exceeding a
bit the rating (12.68 V inst.of 12.6 max).
Harmful for the electronics.

Rush on the Antec !

Thanks, I popped in my old Supermicro 300W and the system powered up fine
this morning. MY only concern is that this power supply is not
powerful
enough, I can get an Antec locally today which I may do.

Thanks

I have a very bad experience with Enermax:

Last year my son offered a front panel for my birthday. The power
supply
was
inverted. Fortunately, only my CD burmer was connected to it. I
fried
it,
applying 15 V to the 5V input. It's a __ manufacturer error __, not
a
failure.

My 465 W PSU failed 9 months after purchase, didn't start. It was under
guatanty and I tried to have another brand because of my lack of
confidence
in Enermax and the non-availability.

I got another one loaned by the dealer and mine was finally
exchanged
3.5
months later. I had to return at the dealer (20 km) because the new one
wasn't compatible with the MoBo (extended connector). They picked an
adapter
from another model and gave it to me.

May be I got two lemons. Dunno ! but I won't buy Enermax again.

Thanks, I have an Enermax 465 that worked fine with my P4TE but I
wouldn't
rule that out. I have 2 fans not working which does point to the power
supply, the power supply is about 2 years old.

I need to get one for my wife, any suggestions on a good one? Is Antec
any
good, that last post led me to believe that wasn't a good option,
where
is
a
good place to order a PS from?

I would like to try the power supply first before betting on the
CPU
since
this is a retail chip and the odds of it being bad are slim.

Thanks
John

I just upgraded and bought a P4C800-E Deluxe board, a Northwood 3.0
GHz
CPU
and 2 512 MB of OCZ PC3200 DDR400 ram and a Seagate 160 GB SATA
drive.
I
had
the worst time ever bringing this machine up. I get a warning
that
the
CPU
failed the check test. I upgraded the bios and it is better but when
it
is
cold I got this error this morning I rebooted it twice and it was
fine.
Once
it is up it is solid as a rock.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there a fix?

Thanks

far so good.

Thanks
