Strange message about USB 2

Peter Kirk

Hi

I have a laptop running XP professional which has two USB 2 sockets on the
back. I have an external harddisk which has a "double" cable - that is, it
plugs in to both of my USB sockets. I think this has something to do with
the amount of power the external disk needs, but I'm not 100% sure.

Anyway, just recently when I start the computer I get a message that "the
unit would work better if connected to USB 2 instead of USB 1" (I'm not sure
about the exact wording because the OS is in Danish and I have to
translate). If I click on the message a popup window suggests a new "USB
hub" I could use instead.

What is going on? I only have 2 USB sockets, and they are USB 2.

The popup text is like this (translated from Danish):
"Unknown USB unit is a USB high speed unit, but will function with decreased
speed if it is connected to a slow hub.
The hubs shown in bold have free ports which can support USB high speed
units."

Then there is a list that looks like:
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0-extended host controller - 24CD
USB Root Hub (6 ports) (this is in bold)
free port
free port
free port
free port
free port
free port

And then more text:
"Recommendation
Disconnect connection to Unknown USB-unit from its current port og connect
it afterwards to one of the ports on the hub shown in bold".

How do I do that?

Thanks for any hints,
Peter
