Strange icon in query results

A simple aggregate query grouping on a text field is generating a result I
have never seen. There is a box with a question mark in it, followed by a
dollar sign. This appears only in one column of the query results...and the
affected column seems to vary when adding or deleting different columns.
Using the query to support a report or form causes a square box to appear
where the first character of information would normally be.

This is happening in Access 2007. The same database runs just fine on a
machine with Access 2003. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Sounds like some type of corruption. Compact your database.
