Strange favorites question

I don't use IE all that much so I don't know when this happened, but
suddenly on opening IE today, I noticed that all favorites now have .url
after the name - so for example, I have a favorite on my Links bar
called Bank: it now says Bank.url. On investigation, ALL my favorites
have got this .url extension!
Does anyone know how that happened and how I can get rid of it?
