Strange Excel problem with Jump List

J

Jack Wiggins

I am running Windows 7 and Office 2007.

When I open an Excel file from the Jump List, none of the commands on the
ribbon are clickable. It is just as though the program is frozen. I can make
changes to the worksheet but I cannot save them. I can close the program by
clicking the "x" in the upper right-hand corner but changes are not saved.

If I open Excel first, then open the worksheet, this problem does not
occur - the program works normally.

Has anyone else seen this?

Not having ugrade to 7 yet, I can't be certain but this is similar to an
issue I had with users opening a files from a hyperlink in a web browser.

The issue there was that unless the preferences were set to
open Excel files in a seperate window they were opened in the Internet
explorer version of office and most features were not available.

I would poke around and see if there is some kind of setting controlling the
application being used in the Jump List.

For my problem the association could be found in the File Extension registry
(where extensions are linked to applications) there is a check box

This is one of the tabs you used to find under Tools-Folder-Options. When
you selected a file type and click the advanced button there was a check box
to browse in same window. Unchecking this for the .xls extension solved the
issue.

Hope this may point you in the right direction
