Strange booting incident

I just now started my XP computer as usual. It drew the icons and
taskbar as usual, but then it suddenly clicked and rebooted all over
again! Then it worked as usual.

Do you know why this might happen? It's never done that before. I
just loaded the monthly patches, if that matters.

I just found an item in Event Viewer: Save Dump. The details say: The
computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.
(what could that mean except for a possible hardware glitch?)

I would add that I previously turned off Automatic Updates and then
turned them on again. I also had to reconfigure the System Tray icons
for some reason.

Relax. Sh** happens.

Richard,
I'm pretty sure that if you go to the 'System' control
panel (right-click on 'My Computer and choose 'Properties' ).

Then, under the 'Advanced' tab along the top, if you click on the
'Settings button in the 'Startup and Recovery' section.

Under 'System Failure' you will see some options with 'checkboxes' next
to them.

Uncheck the item 'Automatically restart'

....and the sudden re-starting behaviour should then not occur again.

But, you will still have the event logged so long as you *don't* uncheck
the box above this marked "Write an event to the system log".
