Strange Behaviour! Excel wont calculate COUNTIF?? why

hi there

when i use excel 2000 and 2003 (have tried both) they wont calculate
my countif formula

i have tried
* F2
* F9
* doing calculations after this to check for number of formaulae (work
fine)
* countif with constant value, variable value...
=COUNTIF(A26:A150,A13)
=COUNTIF(A26:A150,"EM 10")


* changing format
* checking that tools/options set to auto calculate (other ones are
fine)
* using the formula builder (which shows my result of 27 fine)

* nothing in status bar

if anyone knows why/how this happens - please let me know

Chances are the cell in which your formula resides is
formatted to text. Changing it to general normally does
not help. Try another formula in that cell and see if it
works (try =1+1+). If there is something wrong with the
cell simply put the formula somewhere it does calculate.
