strange beeping

My windows xp professional started doing something strange. I'm not sure
when it started since I usually leave my sound off. but I when I turned by
sound I, I discovered that I my computer beeps twice every few seconds. I
have turned off everything in msconfig / startup and non windows services.
I have changed from loging onto domain to just loging into computer. but
still beep beep every few seconds.

I also tried turning off processes to see if I could stop the beeping. no
luck.

how can I determine what process or application or part of os is creating
the beeps.

Do an imediate back up of any critical files, documents etc.

This is likely to be the bios "beep" code. Possibly memory problems. If
you have a decent motherboard manual it will list the code meanings. The
link may be useful but your bios maker will be the most accurate.

Do you have the Google Deskbar installed? I've heard of this happening
because of it screwing up. - if so uninstall the toolbar and
reinstall.

no google desktop bar.

I don't think it is motherboard. beeping is more of a deep tone, tu da ...
tu da ......... tu da... tu da first group moves higher and second group
moves lower. repeats continuously.

new motherboard, memory, and processor.

gigbit athlon 64, 3200+ with 1 gb ram.

sound is coming through speakers. I can mute the speaker. but obviously
can't listen to music.

bios beeping would be coming from mb, I would think.

thanks

Sounds like you have RAM issues...Are the parameters for your RAM set
properly in BIOS? Are yo runing matched pairs?

two beeps repeated at interval most often relates to RAM parity errors or to
SPD timing errors from mismatched pairs (even if the RAM is from the same
manufacturer...the SPD control chips could be different if the RAM was not
purchased as a tested matched pair).

Try booting with just one module...if that does not beep, try booting with
just the other module.
If that does not beep, try putting the second module in a different slot.

John..
Couple of things that may help, don't know if this is the cause but at least
try them and see.
First, go to Control Panel open Sounds and Audio devices, click on the tab
Sounds in the bottom window you'll see Program events..click on each on and
at the bottom where it says Sounds, to the right of that will be a small box
with an arrow pointing to the right, click on that to see if that sound
corresponds to the sound you are hearing from you computer..you may have to
go down the whole list, but if you find the sound at least you know what it
represents. At the top it will say Sound Scheme, click on the drop down
arrow and you should see NO SOUNDS, if you don't want any sounds then click
on the bottom where it says OK, you may have to restart you computer but this
should stop all sounds emitting from your computer..however it could be
anything from Mail Notification, or Pop Up Blocker blocking a pop up, in fact
let's go there and turn off the pop up blocker sound..

Go to Tools on your Toolbar or go to Control Panel and click on Internet
Options then click on the Privacy Tab at the top. At the bottom of the page
will be Pop-up Blocker, check to see if you have a check mark in the Block
Pop-up?? Go to Settings to the immediate right..on the page that comes up
next look at the bottom and you'll see Notification and Filter Level..If
there is a checkmark in the box "Play a sound when a pop-up is blocked." then
uncheck it and then hit close. That will take you back to Internet
Options..when back there hit the tab Advanced..There you will see a lot of
boxes with checkmarks in them..scroll down to "MULTIMEDIA" and uncheck the
box "Play sounds in web paes"...Hopefully that will stop the beeping
sounds..just remember how to get back to them if you want to turn your sounds
back on..Most beeps are sounds indicating some action that has taken
place..it's just a matter of tracking it down..Hope this helps out..

Go into Control Panel>Sounds and Audio devices, click on the Sounds tab and
see if any of the program events sound the same.

It could be some event locked in a loop, or maybe an IR device nearby
continually connecting.

Maybe check you motherboard manual to make sure it doesn't use on-board
sound for bios beeps (just in case)

bingo. that is what I did last night. This morning I fixed it.

thanks

I compared the sound with the sound list from the control panel sounds and
discovered that the sound was the same as device connect followed by the
device disconnect sound.

I then unplugged my x10 serial connector and pda usb connector. the sound
problem went away.

I believe it was the pda. I had to recently rebuild my server, which
required reconnecting to domain, which creates a new user profile on the
computer. After this active sync wasn't loading. apparantly it can't deal
with a change of user to this extent. I had to reinstall active sync.

thanks
