Wonder if anyone can help.
My friend has a new laptop, and connects to the Internet through AOL.

She receives regular e mails from work with excel files as attachments,
which was fine on her old computer.

However on her new laptop, AOL for some reason, converts them to .dat
files.

Any idea what she can do to stop them from this strange behaviour?

Cheers in advance

Yep. Tell your friend to follow the following instructions exactly. It won't
work unless she does so...

1) Take the AOHELL CD

2) If you are old enough to drive, and have a licence, place it in the
middle of the drive and back over it several times.

3) If you are not old enough to drive - or don't have a licence - place
said CD in the microwave and cook on full power for a couple of minutes - it
really is fascinating, and most satisfying, to watch.

4) Place resulting mess in the rubbish

5) Pick up the phone, call AOHELL 'Customer Service' and tell them you
wish to cancel your account. Don't, however tempting it might be, let them
persuade you to stay with offers of 'free' months.

6) Ask people for recommendations for a proper ISP.

7) Call new ISP of choice and sign up.

There! Problem solved.

Unfortunately, removing AOHELL's trojanic software will, most likely,
require a complete format and reinstall.

The problem is that she in on AOL.
She should find a real ISP and ditch that piece of crap AOL. Unfortunately,
the only way to get rid of AOL once it is installed on your computer is to
format the hard drive and re-install windows.

As you have discovered, AOL does weird things to computer Operating Systems.

If it hurts every time you poke yourself in the eye with a sharp stick
(AOL), the obvious solution is to quit poking yourself in the eye with a
sharp stick (AOL).

If you absolutely MUST poke yourself in the eye with a sharp stick (AOL),
then feel free to seek assistance from the maker of the sharp stick (AOL).

Whilst not QUITE answering my question, I'm in full agreement with all
of you.
AOL is the biggest pile of **** ever to infect a CD.

Still, is there anything she can do to resolve it, as I doubt she will
move ISP's?
