Stops responding when searching for files

Hi...

I'm an IT... and I have no idea why this is happening.

The computer I am troubleshooting is a compaq presario with WinXP SP2.

I click start, search, all files and folders... I then enter what i want to
search for (example: temp), and click search. The window the hangs (freezes)
and I have to "end task" in order to close the window.

I restart the computer in safe mode and the search utility works just fine.
I've disabled everything in "msconfig" as well as disabled all IE add-ons and
downloaded program files.

It still happens...

Please help!!

Double-Click "My Computer", double-click the "Local Disk (C
Click "Tools", "Folder Options", click the "View" tab, under "Files and Folders", check
everything except "Do not cache thumbnails"

Under "Hidden files and Folders", check "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide extensions....", and "Hide protected......"
check the box, "Remember each folder's view setting", click "Apply", "OK"
