Stop Windows Messenger From Starting During Bootup

My daughter uses Windows Messenger on our family computer? Is there a way to disable it from automatically starting when I turn on our PC? When I'm working on the PC, I keep getting Messenger pop ups indicating that her buddies are logged in. This is good for her but annoying for the rest of the family. I then must go into Messenger and log off. This happens even when there is no Messenger icon on the bottom right of the desktop. I would prefer that she turns on Messenger when she wants to use it. I have a later version of Norton. A previous note suggests that the problem can be solved by unchecking the Windows Messenger toggle in Norton however I assume that this will stop the virus protection as well.

In Messenger, go into tools - options - general and turn off the first
checkbox (automatic ...)
