Stop auto correct recognizing apostrophed words (didn't-haven't)

I just downloaded a new version of Word 2007 (old one corrupt). This
download gives a squiggly line to contracted words with an apostrophe --
haven't, doesn't, shouldn't. How do I stop that function? My original
version did not mark these words.

The usual reason for this is that the document has at some point been
converted from WordPerfect and the apostrophes are actually characters in
the WP Typographic Symbols font, which Word doesn't recognize as
apostrophes. Test this by selecting one of them and pressing the apostrophe
key on the keyboard.

If this clears the problem, then select another of the "fake" apostrophes,
Ctrl+C to copy it, and use Ctrl+V to paste it into the "Find what" box of
the Replace dialog. Type an apostrophe into the "Replace with" box (it can
be just a straight apostrophe; Word will AutoFormat it) and Replace All.

I suspected there might be a specific option for that, but I didn't know for
sure, since I don't usually spell check in English. :-)

And make sure that, in Grammar settings, the contractions checkbox is clear.

Thanks for you reply. I do not see a box with that option under Grammar in Word 2007. What is quite odd is my original version did not do this to my documents. I'm a writer and spent an enormous amount of time writing every day. These squiggly lines throughout a page is making it difficult to work.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for you reply. This was a brand new document that I just began--the first one since the new version was downloaded. Any other suggestions?

Thanks very much!

In that case, the suggestion about contractions being possibly marked by the
grammar checker (rather than the spelling checker) seems more likely to be
useful.

Dear Lois,

Go to the Office button, Word Options | Proofing | Settings: the rule about
contractions is the 2nd one in the Style section. Uncheck it and “shouldn’tâ€,
“I’dâ€, “won’tâ€, etc. won’t be flagged by the grammar checker anymore.

I hope it helps,

Hi again, Lois,

I was just writing a post on the grammar checker settings for our blog (with
some screenshots), so you can check this out if you are interested: I just
posted it a few minutes ago (I had a paragraph about this "contractions"
rule, which I also unchecked in my personal version, but which I know some
people rely on to avoid contracted forms in their official documents):

Best wishes,
