Still need help breaking links, but am sorry about the graphics

T

First, thank you for telling me about the graphics. I didn't
realize that. Regarding the links, I appreciate the direction, but it's
not a matter of finding the links. I know where they are. I want them
broken. I do not want to be questioned about whether or not I want to
update them on a daily basis when I open my gradebook. I use it
everyday for keeping attendance and grades.
There is no reason to update the workbooks it's linked to. I keep
that information, because on rare occasion I've been questioned later in
the year about what grade a student had when they left me, because the
main attendance/grade database lost information and they needed to
regather it.
If anyone can tell me how to break the links I would be extremely
grateful.
Thank you.

Hello-
Open the file and go to Edit>Links, select them all from the list and click
the Break Link button.

Sorry... I jumped in without testing the water because of the split post.

If you want to leave the links intact but not be prompted, you can go to
Tools>Options>Edit and remove the check for prompting for link updates. You
can also select the cells, copy - but leave them selected, then use
Edit>Paste Special--Values. I believe there is also a
Tools>Options>Calculation checkbox for 'Save external link values' which may
also do the job if you clear the checkbox.

Hi,
There is no break link button :-( I got scolded earlier because I'd
included graphics to show what I'm getting and break links isn't an option I
can find anywhere.

I went and tried after your post, but it made no difference. This is Excel
2000. At work I have the exact same problem. If you have any other
suggestions, I'd be anxious to hear them.

Hi,
I used the Tools/Options/Edit and removed the ck box to prompt to update
links. Now it won't prompt-- it just tries to open the link and I get hung up
there because that link's been deleted. Even when I try to click OK, that open
dialog box just keeps coming up.
My mistake was not pasting values only, which was how I figure I got into
this mess to begin with. Too late now. I also when to the Calculation tab in
Tools/Options and removed the save external link values, and I still have the
same problem when opening.
I may pull my hair out over this one, yet. Any other suggestions?

Hmmm.

One of the options in findlink is to delete the link (replace it with the
value).

That didn't work?

And one of the options was to just convert the links to values with no messages.

That didn't work either?

I went back and clicked on Tools/Add-Ins.... An Add-Ins dialoge box opened with
Add-Ins available: At the bottom was Update Add-in Links. It was checked. All of
the options were already checked.

When I click on it and select Browse... an open dialogue box comes up with
Sound-Proof in an AddIns folder. When I drop the arrow, I see that the path for
this AddIns folder is: Windows/Application Data/Microsoft/AddIns.

If I go to Tools and Update AddIn Links.... A little Update AddIn Links dialogue box
opens. The radio button is in Active document (or there is a choice for All open
documents). If you click OK, nothing discernable happens. When I close and reopen,
it still prompts to update links.

There are no choices, so it didn't seem as though I was doing anything wrong. I
don't know about or see anywhere any of the options you referred to.

You can either install the Findlink.xla addin or just use file|open to be able
to use it.

I don't load it as an addin--I just do a file|open when I need it.

After it's open (either way), look under Tools, you'll find "Find Links". Click
on that. And you'll see what the options are.

ps. If you've installed Findlink.xla as an addin, you should see:
Find/delete links
in the tools|addins dialog.

Hi,
Well, I went and got the zip file, opened it, and then added it in. I am getting a
Microsoft Excel dialogue box with a "The macro '!FinkLinks' cannot be found." message. :-(

I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but maybe I am.

I'd try it again.

Lots of people use this utility and I don't recall anybody posting this problem
after they've tried it.

ps.

You may want to share the version of excel that you're running.

I will try again. I'm sorry; I thought I'd mentioned I'm running Excel 2000 on Win
98. I recently bought a new computer and bought the entire Office 2003 suite,
including what they took out. I teach, so I need to keep up on things. At school
I'm only teaching Computerized Keyboarding/Word, but I've been in-servicing teachers
lately.

After I got the computer home, I had a problem with it freezing on the Net. It's
back being worked on and I can't wait to get it back. I will try again, but maybe
I'll just give up on this.

Years ago, we started having problems with some of the apps on this system and wiped
it clean. We reformatted C:/ and loaded and tested everything in Office as we went.
Excel worked fine until I loaded an encyclopedia app. (I honestly forget which one)
I lost my paintbrush in Excel and Word. It was wierd. That was before a lot of
stuff was on the Net and my kids were younger--I wanted them to have access to the
reference programs, so I did without.

Thank you for everything, Dave. You have been very helpful and I really appreciate
it.

I have no idea why an action would not work the first time and it would
work the 2nd, but it did! I did everything the same, but this time the
box popped up and I choose the one with no messages.

Now I still got a message because a new sheet appeared with headers of:
sheet, object, name, property, value, and action. I knew there were 3
old workbooks linked and wasn't surprised when I had to repeat the
process 2 more times.

Is there any reason I have to save those 3 sheets, or is it ok to delete
them?

Elaine :)

P.S. This acdentially posted further down and I wanted to be sure you knew what a
great help you were. Thank you, again!

The bottom option was to change every link to a value, but show you what
changed.

You can just close that workbook without closing (or delete it if you saved it).

Sometimes, it's nice to review what it found--just in case you notice something
that you didn't mean to change.

(It doesn't sound like you care about that, though.)

And glad you (finally) got it working!
