STILL choppy+slow

I recently posted a question asking why my computer after being on for a
little while, started to get choppy and slow even though I don't have viruses
or multi-task or run many apps. It was suggested to me that it might be a
memory-leak, so too much memory was being used.

However, even after closing many large applications in the task bar, it was
still running just as slow.

The funny thing is, yesterday, I went to restart my computer to make it run
smooth again for a short while (because restarting helps temporarily), but I
didn't close all the windows I was using before I restarted, so instead of
restarting, the windows closed but the computer stayed turned on without
having restarted, AND IT WAS RUNNING CONSTANTLY SMOOTH.

Any ideas why this is, what is the problem, and how do I keep it running
constantly smooth like it accidentally did on that occassion?

Try some clean boot troubleshooting to see is it's something that's
running at startup that's causing the problem.

Thanks! I will try this.

In the mean time, just in case that doesn't do the trick, if anybody can
name any other possible reasons for my slow and choppy problem and how to fix
it, please suggest it to me, because I need to know as many possible causes
as I can, to make sure I single it out.

You say you don't have viruses but have you run scans for crapware? There
are several free good ones, Ewido, Spybot S&D, AdAware, etc. that you can
use. Run each one at a time in safe mode and you might be surprised what you
find. Also, a large amount of temp files can cause the pc to run poorly.
After you clean things up, do a defrag.

What did you do ... since you didn't restart? Just Log Off and then logged
back on?
How did the computer stay on without restarting? What option did you chose?

Have you checked Task Manager and sort on the CPU and or CPU Time column
(may have to add column to view)?

I am using WINXP SP2. My mouse cursor always gets choppy suddenly when I am
reading any website. Today, I clicks the add/remove windows component. After
added three windows components. It seems to work properly. The components
installed:
1. Internet Information Service (IIS)
2. Networking Services
3. The bottom one in list ".....Message.."
Maybe you can try it. I dont know why it works on my computer.
