What MUST be in the Startup Folder when you open Windows XP? My machine is
soooooo slow on startop and I wonder if it has anything to do with what is in
the Startup Folder. Right now this is what's there
Right now there is
Programs Folder
Netscape shortcut
Netscape Smart Update
Set Program Access and Defaults Shortcuts, and
Windows Update Shortcut

Nothing. The only thing that *should* be there are those things *you* want
there--obviously your security software should start automatically, but
everything else is up to you.

By the way, the real question should be what should start automatically, not
"What MUST be in the Startup Folder." Programs can start automatically from
other places (such as certain registry keys) than the start up folder.

Something is wrong with your list. Please check it again. For example the
Programs folder isn't in the Startup folder, it's the other way around.

Exactly how slow is "soooooo slow"? Is the speed of the computer otherwise
satisfactory? My personal view is that the attention many people pay to how
long it takes to boot is unwarranted. Assuming that the computer's speed is
otherwise satisfactory, it may not be worth worrying about. Most people
start their computers once a day or even less frequently. In the overall
scheme of things, even a few minutes to start up isn't very important.
Personally I power on my computer when I get up in the morning, then go get
my coffee. When I come back, it's done booting. I don't know how long it
took to boot and I don't care.
