Startup takes forever when it used to take 20 seconds

My system:

Athlon64 3500+
Gigabyte AGP Motherboard (brand new but used to work fine)
512mb DDR400
FX5200 gfx card
200gb WD HDD
Windows XP (Home Edition)

When my computer starts up it just sits on the first black screen for
about 4 minutes, it doesnt check the memory or give the processor
details it just sits there, then after the 4 minutes it skips to the
windows loading screen which also takes forever to load. Once the
computer gets to the user selection page its working fine and normal
again and its like nothing is wrong.

Any help this is really annoying having to wait for 10 minutes for my
computer to start up
 
Check your System Event Log. It sounds like Dependency
Service Time-Outs.
Click Start, Run (type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]
Expand the System Category7 [+] and check for Red Icons
in the Right side pane that denote errors. Double-Clicking a
item will bring up the details box.
 
The only errors i could find was this one on the 4th Nov

"The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\D.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

and this error is repeated several times in a row.

One strange this was that under Application there was a warning as the
last event last night (the computer problems only started this morning)
it said this:

"Windows saved user NICKSCOMP\Kae registry while an application or
service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by
the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded
when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try
configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or
NetworkService account.

The Microsoft add-on service called "User Hive Profile Cleanup"
will likely resolve the Application event. It's a common problem
running Windows XP.

Controller errors aren't uncommon either, but could indicate that
your disk drive is in what's called a Dirty or Inconsistent state.
Have you run a Chkdsk C: from within a Cmd prompt window ?
Click Start, Run (type) Cmd [Enter]
from the prompt> Chkdsk C:

If the volume is dirty, be sure your data is backed up before you
do a more comprehensive Chkdsk with the qualifiers /R or /F.
Fixing those inconsistencies can sometimes result in data loss.

Thanks this appears to have worked i used the chkdsk /F. What does the
/R mean?

Essentially the same thing. On ANY command executed from a
cmd prompt you can get a listing of all Qualifiers and a brief line
of explanation by invoking the command with a /? The command
will not execute anything but it's internal help.
