Deadly Loop. Upon emptying Norton Spam folder contents and emptying Recycle
bin, I noticed an email that I wanted to open. I then opened the bin from
my desktop to see if I might recover the mail. It was already gone so I
closed the the window. My computer shutdown, restarted and when I logged on,
it shutdown again and so on.
I am able to start in safe mode, debugging mode, etc. However, when I make
changes trying to correct and repair, the settings are not changed when I
restart. (This includes shutting down system restore, safeboot, etc.) I
have tried to restart and reinstall missing files from the CD with the same
results.
Can ayone help?

thanks for the response kelly.

For the first 12 hours of attempted fixes, Norton said nothing. Whenever I
tried to run virus scan or disk repair from Norton in Safe mode, computer
would shut down and start the loop again. Last night, I renamed the
kernel32.dll via start in prompt mode and restarted. Was caught in the loop
again at restart. (I failed to mention in my first post that check disk
always tried to run at start and quit running at 17%.) I tried to start in
safe mode 3 more times. Curiously, I then got a message telling me my disk
was damaged and could not be repaired, and was stuck in the loop again.
Decided to try one more time before formatting hard drive. A small Norton
window opened and said it was repairing my drive, check disk ran through
completion and I was able to log on and run system.
I was able to run programs, shut down and restart as normal. I have run
virus scan and checked all settings. Everything seems to be mostly normal
now. I still have one problem: the system boots extremely slow. All
programs run very slow. Will this self-correct upon continued use? Any
advice? (I'm almost afraid to shut down anymore for fear I won't start
again.)
thanks again for your help Kelly.
sincerely,
Tommy
