startup progs

Robin Graham

I've just moved to XP from W98 and miss the utility in 98 where you could
stop various programs from starting at start-up. I now find that XP is so...
so.... slow to boot up and it seems I've got 1001 progs starting and I don't
want most of them, but how do I turn them off until I want them? MS Help
talks about managing the start progs from Control Panel, but that seems to
me only to be the list of progs that comes in the drop-up menu when you hit
Start.

Thanks

Hi Rob

Type the following from Start>Run and then go to the Startup tab:

msconfig

You can then uncheck any programs that you don't want starting up with Windows.

I've just looked there but the big trouble with that was that I don't
understand what half the items listed are so I daren't disable them.

Hi

Can you post the names of the programs under 'Startup Items' - or those that you are not sure of. With those someone may be able to tell what those programs are and if they need to be run when Windows starts up.
