startup problem

My grandson deleted everything on my destop (XPSP2). When restarting, only
the recycle bin and the taskbar remains. The problem is that the computer
seems to lock in this condition. Nothing can be done, only the mouse pointer
still moves but even the "start" button doesn't seem to respons. So the
computer even doesn't switch off, unless the power is taken away. Any advise
would be very welcome.

Naturally I don't know exactly what your grandson did, but I'd try booting
into Safe Mode and doing a System Restore to before you let your grandson
touch your computer.

To get into Safe Mode, repeatedly tap the F8 key as the computer is starting
up. Then use your arrow key to select "Safe Mode".

Then Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore, "Restore my
computer to an earlier time".

Thanks Malke, it worked! And now I am going to make an Image of the system
drive...you never know. He's only seven but likes to try everything he finds
out on a computer. Today I think he found out how to "cleanup" my desktop.

Excellent! I'm glad you got it sorted. Thanks for taking the time to let me
know.
