Startup of "server"

My XP computer came with an upgrade voucher for Vista. I have now upgraded to
Vista Business 32bit.

Since upgrading start up has been extreemly long - about 30minutes from
power on to fully working with inmternet connection. Then yesterday it
stopped loading windows at all - getting as far as the "Welcome" screen then
going to a black screen. Task Manager revealed that "LanmanServer" seemed to
be having difficulties getting running. I used MSconfig for a selective start
and eventually found that de-selecting "Server" in the services tab allowed
an apparently fully working, and FAST, statup into windows.

But, having found a temporary fix, how do I make it permanent? How do I
disable "server"? And what would I lose by doing so?

Not entirely sure of the implications on Vista, but on XP disabling the
server service has two effects:

1. You cannot share files/printers.

2. You cannot search the LAN for other computers with shared folders.

-although you can still connect to shares which you know exist.
