StartUp Menu

I've noticed when I boot-up this computer that 10
different programs are activated because they're listed
under the StartUp button in the Programs section of the
Start button. (Whew!). Anyway, because it slows my
system down, I'd like to remove all but the most
important programs (like my anti-virus program) from this
command but can't figure out how to get at the section of
XP PRO that allows me to modify the StartUp portion of
the Start button. Can anyone tell me where the StartUp
settings are buried? Thanks.

You can right-click on your start button, explore, and drill down to the
startup folder in your programs menu, and delete shortcuts you don't want.
However, if you want something easier, that will also show you things that
start up automatically that *aren't* in the startup folder, click on start,
run, type msconfig and hit Enter. Go to the startup tab and you can untick
what you don't want.

Do not assume that any such program slows your computer down.
Although many such programs *do* slow your computer down, not all
do. It depends on what it does. Some background programs have
little or no impact on performance. Each program should be
evaluated on its own merits, not gotten rid of willy-nilly.
Determine what the program is, what it does for you, and what, if
any, perfromance penalty is associated with running it. Then
decide whether its worth having or not.

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start. Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG
from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the
programs you don't want to start automatically.

Just right click and delete the ones you don't want. They're just shortcuts.

That's true of those that are in Start/Programs/Startup, but not
necessarily true of autostarting programs in general. They don't
all start from there.

True, but the OP mentioned the startup folder specifically.

Yes, I know, but he may not be aware that programs can autostart
from other places. I just wanted to make that clear.
