Startup manager

Are there any startup managers that allow XP services to be started,
stopped and disabled?

Have you tried the included Windows utility for this:?
c:\windows\system32\services.msc

I have a short cut to it near my desktop.

Yes, but it doesn't allow changing the services from auto to manual or
stopping/starting without a reboot.

It may depend on which service but I've done this many times.
or stopping/starting without a reboot.

I went through my services some while back and disabled or stopped
a number of them according to blackviper's recommendations. I didn't
have to reboot afterwards. Having said that, if you're making
substantial changes once-off, I'd recommend rebooting afterwards
and check Windows functionality is still ok.

Oops, my bad. I'm thinking of Msconfig.

I'm just looking for a freeware program that does the same as msconfig and
also allow changing services from auto to manual, but without a reminder
when rebooted.

I've seen a number of shareware products but no free ones yet.

MSconfig is not a good place to fiddle with MS services.

Well as said, 'services.msc' is as good as it gets for this.

I'm not aware of a free utility but doubtless one exists.

If you have XP Pro, right click on My computer, select
manage. Select - services and applications/services. Go
down the list and change anything you want as long as you
are careful. These are only windows services.

Third party apps can be handled with something like Auroruns
from Systernals found here if you are brave - it is pretty
comprehensive:

http://www.sysinternals.com/ProcessesAndThreadsUtilities.html

or something like Windows Startup Inspector for the
non-system startups which you can find here:

Not really sure what you are tring to do that you can't do with the MS
services utilities, but ...

I'm not trying to do anything. The thread was started by 'John'
who wants to enable/disable/start/stop XP Services and I pointed
him towards the Windows utility 'services.msc' which does this.

I knew that, I should have added an OP to my reply. Your post was
germane to the thread so I replied to your post. Sorry about the
confusion.

As I said, I wasn't sure what John was trying to do. I have found that
the info on Black Viper's page together with a right-click in the
services.msc utility works pretty well for tweaking (i.e., disabling)
XP services.

And if you want to get really crazy:

You might want to look at this one:

WinServices

http://www.dominetrix.org/

WinServices is an enhanced Windows Service Manager, that allows you to
start/stop services, and view them by their current status (color coded), as
well as sorted by dependency or service type. Also you can view and change
all service data such as name or description. The program allows you to
create a snapshot of the current services, and later compare it with a new
configuration, to see which services have been changed, added or removed. If
you are domain administrator you can manage your network machine services in
the same domain. Also this program can detect on-line if the state of the
running services change and save a LOG with all changes.

Nice, looks better than services.msc. Thanks.

But it's a shame it doesn't do the file in the Startup folder too.

Looking for one program that does both (like msconfig).

As hummingbird said, Windows has a native application to do that.

I use this program, from 'r2 Studios' you can disable programs from
loading, Or delay them loading all at once. Improves system
proformance.

Startup Delayer v2.1.10

When Windows loads it's Startup file, it attempts to load every program
in there at the same time. Therefore if you have quite a lot of
programs starting when Windows starts, each program will try and grab
CPU time so that it can load.

If each program tries to do this at the same time, you soon notice the
slow down that occurs, due to your CPU trying to help all the programs
to load, and your hard disk accessing multiple files.

Startup Delayer allows you to setup how many seconds after Windows has
started, to load each program.

For Example:
If you have your mail program and a special clock starting up, then you
can make your mail start say 10 seconds after Windows has loaded, and
then the special clock start 20 seconds after Windows Starts.

[FREEWARE]
Compatible with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
