I want to erase my hard drive and then start windows 98 again. Once i do that i can install XP on my own

The Windows XP CD is bootable. Boot with the CD and follow instructions to
erase the current partition and install a new copy of XP erasing the old
information. Be aware that this installation will erase all information on
the hard drive so back up data files first.

You don't need to install 98 before installing XP with an upgrade CD. The
XP install program will ask for a qualifying program, insert the 98 CD and
click OK (or continue) and it will then ask for the XP CD again after it has
verified the qualifying program exists.
