Starting in regular mode

Hello

I have recently acquired an Asus notebook L1400 series running Windows
XP Professional. It is a PIII, 256 MB RAM, 10 GB free HD space. HD is
partitioned into two 10 GB drives. No viruses or malware evident - all
anti virus, anti malware programs up to date and run regularly.. Use
Zone Alarm firewall. CCleaner used to clean up rubbish, careful check
done for any rogue programs starting up. Defrag. run regularly..

I can only get the computer to start in Safe Mode, whenever I try to
start it normally, it starts up, shows the XP Professional splash
screen, there is some hard disk activity for about 30 seconds and then
nothing except a regular hard disk activity light flash. every two or
three seconds

The computer always starts with the same user name who has full
rights. I cannot switch to administrator as I do not have the password
and previous owner is unknown - notebook purchased at auction.

Any help to get me into normal mode greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Echy

First - boot into Safwe Mode and remove the Video Card driver and the
Network driver and reboot - see if it boots then.

If not - you may be better off performing a repair installation.

Hi,

Did you use CCleaner to "fix" the registry? If so, does it have an undo
function?

Frankly, if you recently acquired it and do not know the password or have
access to the administrator account, then you should take the recovery media
it came with and create a clean installation rather than running with
someone else's junk.

Many, many thanks for your great help.

Success! Removing the video card driver and the network driver did not
work. However completing the XP Repair Install did and combined with
reinstalling the VGA driver from the Asus driver disk all is OK again.

The notebook now boots and runs beautifully.

Thank you so much for your much valued advice.

this is due to the driver that's installed for your IDE controller most
likely, network, video and other things would only make the computer freeze
or crash after the boot screen as they aren't initialized until after boot.
