Starting IE and Outlook Express

R

Rick

For several months now, when I click on the Microsoft Internet Explorer or
Microsoft Outlook Express icons down on the lower bar next to the start
button, it takes approx. 5 minutes before they start. I was told back then
to clean my disk and defrag. I done that then and again today. I still have
the same problem. I am running Windows XP with McAfee SecurityCenter and
Webshots. Gotten from System Information was, XP Professional version 2002
5.1.2600 service pack 2. Pentium !!! Intel. Total physical memory 256 MB.
Available physical memory 48.39 MB.
My disk capacity is 12.63. I have 4.24 space free which is 33%.
CTRL ALT DELETE brings up windows task manager. Some of the users are;
Imagename Mem Usage
MpCmdRun.exe 2,748
MSKSRVR.exe 6,512
Msdtc.exe 1,380
alg.exe 548
dllhost.exe 2,488
taskmgr.exe 4,940
mcshield 10,424
svchost.exe 8,188
MsMpEng.exe 10,470
CSRSS.exe 1,400
There is a total of 41 Imagename shows up and all are using some memory.
Could this be my problem (too many things running in background)or dose
anybody have any ideals? Thanks

Excessive crossposting eliminated.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

What if you uninstall Windows Defender?
What if you uninstall McAfee?
Are you running a beta of Windows Defender or the final version?
Do you think you cross posted to enough newsgroups?

Are you saying that Windows Defender and/or McAfee is slowing down my
responce time, when I try to start Microsoft IE and Microsoft Outlook
Express? And should I remove it. I see Windows ahve a anti software out now
called Windows Live. Hows it?
My Windows Defender is Beta 2. Definition version 1.14.1736.7.
These are the newsgroups that I thought might have someone who could help
me. I didn't know I couldn't post to more than one newsgroup.
Thanks

I'm asking if the problem persists if they are uninstalled. I don't know.
Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs
The final version of Windows Defender has been released. You should update
to that. Mine is still named Windows Defender.

I see Wal-Mart has a box version of Windows Live 8-1. Is this all final
versions, not Beta?
Can I uninstall McAfee, thru Add or Remove Programs, completely and then
install Windows Live. My subscription to McAfee just expired last week and
they want $60 to upgrade.
Windows Live 8-1 in Wal-Mart wants $39.
I'm thinking a Windows product running on Windows XP is a sure thing????
Thanks

Not sure what you mean by Windows Live 8.1 - There are a whole bunch of
things with Windows Live as part of their name, none of which I have much
faith in. There are two free anti-virus programs that I like, Avast
(www.grisoft.com) and Avast (www.avast.com). I use AVG on most of my
computers. For anti-spyware I think I can recommend Windows Defender from
Microsoft, but no anti-spyware program catches everything. Personally, I
think that the Windows Firewall in WinXP
SP2 is just fine.

I meant Windows Live OneCare. Its in the stores in box form. Wouldn't it
work with Windows XP better than McAfee? Thanks

Just a thought here....Increase your page file size and maybe add some more
RAM.
If you have a large amount of programs running and judging from your posted
threads you do, your problem maybe a RAM issue and not a program problem.
