start-up sound delay

On my Dell Inspiron 8600, when Windows loads, the "chime" sound
doesn't
appear until about 45-60 seconds after booting up. There is also a
45-60 second or more delay from when the system is booted until the
Volume icon appears in my taskbar (both these occur simultaneously).
This just recently started happening. And I haven't installed any new
programs in quite a while. Any solutions?

QUIKSILVER,

Thanks so much for that link! I had tried everything from
re-installing audio drivers to updating Windows Xp with every update
available out there. Seems that every time I downloaded an update, the
problem was fixed for a little while but eventually came back. And all
this time I thought my sound card was failing :)
