Start up problem

Hi,

I own an IBM ThinkPad R51 laptop. I purchased it way back in May 2005.

Since yesterday, the laptop has been behaving wierdly. It was working great
till Monday afternoon when I visited MS Update site. It just hung... and
since then its been the case...

When I start the system, I can reach the Desktop... but when I try to launch
IE 7 it just hangs up... also no window opens fully.

The Kasperksy Anti-Virus 6.0 (I purchased it just ten days ago) has, in a
half-window (it didn't open in full), "detected" some "registry" problem (I
am not sure what this problem is about). I encountered a similar kind of
problem in April-May 2007.

The problem at that time came about, I guess, as a result of a Security
Update which would not install. However, after getting some really good
advice from Steve, an MVP, I restored my system.

I have TuneUp Utilities 2007 software installed on my notebook. The notebook
has 40 GB & 512 RAM.

Can you anyone help me? Why is my laptop unable to run in the normal, smooth
way (like it had in the last two years)?

Why is it getting hung? What can I do to make it function properly?

PLS HELP.

Warm Regards,

Bharat

"Tuning Tools" like that are notorious for causing all kinds of problems.
Uninstalling these tools does not help in most cases since this does not
undo the system damages. I'm running several WinXP machines free of any
problems and all of them have in common that there is no such crapware
installed.
