Yesterday I posted a plea for help a few kind people offered advice to today
the problem got worse. when I start my computer instead of the monitor
bursting into life it goes into standby. over the last few days I have had to
use the power on/off button repeatedly untill I got a response. one person
said to right click on my computer to go into the device manager & look for
an exclamation mark under graphics but I could not find a mention of
graphics. Today after a few attempts I got first a black screen with rows of
couler square & numbers along the bottom the next time the whole screen was
full of coulered squares, the next time a black screen with a flashing colon
in the LH corner after about 19 tries it finaly worked but now I'm afraid to
switch off in case I can't restart. I would be grateful for any advice before
calling out a pro. the computer is about 2yrs. old I got it direct from the
manufacturers who have now gone out of buisness. many thanks

Either your monitor or your video card is failing. There may be other
hardware issues, but it isn't possible to tell from your post. The
normal way to troubleshoot this is to:

1. Check the cable connection from the monitor to the computer. Make
sure it is snug and no pins are bent.

2. Attach the computer to a different monitor. If the trouble follows
you, then you know your original monitor is fine.

3. Swap out the video card for a known-working one. If the problems
disappear, replace the original card.

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).
