Start up error.

Bill Cooper

I recently installed service pack 2 for WindowsXP, now
every time I boot up I get the following error message.

settings[1].exe

! CRC error! File content has been modified. If you
run a system debugger, clear all breakpoints before
running this program.

[OK]

If anyone knows how to resolve this error, please post the
instructions.

Thanks!
Bill.

[1].exe file. I have turned off all hidden files, and
searched for the "settings[1].exe file, but WinXP cannot
locate the file. So I'm beginning to think this is a
registry issue. Have you heard of any patches for this
error, since the SP2 release? I have seen documentation
on the web, with others having the exact same error.

Thanks!
Bill.

Sorry Bill I haven't. The reason I posted that as a solution is because
someone else recently had the same problem and that is what solved it
for them. There were several posts in a short period about the same
thing, and haven't been anything since then.

Rock,
Finally resolved this one. Here is what I discoved below.
After I installed "Service Pack 2", I had this error as well! I found an
executable file in my "Start up" folder called, "crc.exe" and I moved it to a
folder I created in "My Documents" folder called "Boot Errors." I would
advise against deleting the file, just in case in encounter other issues
later. A little history regarding my situation... I had been out looking at
a "Ring Tone" converter for my cell phone, and I think the download of the
setup file put it there. So, just in case this is what you were doing too,
that might explain how you got that error.

So just single right click on your “Start†button, single left click on
“Openâ€, double left click on the “Programs†folder, and double left click on
the “Startup†folder. If the “crc.exe†file is located there, just follow
the above suggestion and it will resolve the error.

Hope this helps!

Bill, thanks for posting back the resolution so others can benefit, and
glad you got it worked out.
